Barbara achieves her ambitionThree years ago I was given the opportunity to do my NVQ in Promoting Independence from the Day Hospital where I then worked. I decided this would be an excellent opportunity to stretch myself and it would help me to do my job in a more fulfilling way. I should add that I have been a nursing assistant for more years than I care to remember, and at that point in time was not intending to go any further, except towards retirement! I was encouraged by my manager and the staff on my ward to 'go for it' and I went to the first meeting. Having just decided to do NVQ 2, I was surprised to find myself saying yes when it was suggested that I try NVQ3, but once again I received a lot of encouragement from my colleagues, who had more faith in me than I had in myself at the time. Half way through the NVQ we were all given an opportunity to go on a Headstart course, which we were told was to prepare us for University. A number of people signed up for it, but I did not because I didn't think it applied to me. At that time I had no intention whatsoever of going to University; I was too old for nurse training and was quite happy to go for the NVQ. I was not even sure I could manage that! Once again, however, I was persuaded that there was no harm in trying and so I did! From the very first session I loved it! It gave me such a feeling of achievement and made me feel so motivated, and I looked forward to every session. Then in October 2002 I saw an advert in the vacancies bulletin at the Day Hospital for an Assistant Practitioner Trainee, a new role within the Trust, which was to start the following year. The role required the trainee to work at his/her place of work and also to attend University on a regular basis in order to study for two years for a Foundation Degree in Arts; a Diploma in Health and Social Care. I applied for the post, interviewed, and was successful! If l had not taken the Headstart course I would have found University life and studying daunting, to say the least and I am so glad I have been given the chance to further my education in this way. Recently, I have received the news that I have won an award for Adult Learners Week. So - to all of you who are hesitating - go for it! It can be done!
